The Parson Russell Terrier
is also been known as the Parson Jack Russell Terrier and the Jack Russell
Terrier. The American Kennel Club officially changed the name to
the Parson Russell terriers on April 1, 2003.
The Reverend John Russell
developed the Jack Russell terrier in the south of England in the 1800’s.
He was known as the “Sporting Parson” as he hunted his Parson Russell terrier
in the Devon countryside. The Parson Russell terrier ran with the
horse and hounds as they trailed the fox. When the fox went
to ground, the Parson Russell terrier entered the ground and bolted the
fox so that the hunt could continue.
The Parson Russell terrier
is a courageous breed that still has a strong hunting instinct. The
Parson Russell terrier has become widely popular in many countries as both
a pet and a working terrier. They are also increasing in popularity
for racing, agility, fly ball etc.
